Team America: World Police DVD News   |   22 May 2005

Scat and Golden Showers are Back in the Puppet Sex Scene:
Matt Stone: We actually thought about not doing it but at the end of the day, I thought it was just really funny. The original thought was not to put it back.

Trey Parker: So when we were going to do the DVD, we’re like, “All right, do we put out our version or do we put out the version that we intended it to be or do we put those two shots in too?”

Matt Stone: I think Trey just said, “F*ck it.”

Trey Parker: And now they’re in there.

Matt Stone Stands By the R-Rated Cut of Team America: “There’s a few shots in the sex scene that are obviously different. The sex scene in the unrated version is different. But the movie is not about puppets having sex. The heart of the movie is still in the theatrical version. We would never have released it if we thought that it was compromised in any big way. It’s not.”

No Commentary on the Team America World Police DVD:
Matt Stone: I don't think we could do a very good commentary track because by the time the DVD had to be made,it’s only a month or two after the movie.Honestly, we’re just burnt out and emotionally you’re just not at a place where you can really talk well about the movie.I think it would be really kind of an angry commentary track.

Trey Parker: I think it would be a much more interesting commentary track in a few years. Even the South Parks,we can kind of do them now and even that is limited.

Behind the Scenes Featurette on the Team America World Police DVD:
Matt Stone: Anne Garefino was in charge of the DVD. We trusted her to do that stuff. She’s our producer.

Trey Parker: We’re not super into that stuff anyway. We just wanted to make sure that there was a version of the movie on there that people will be stoked on.And we’re glad that there’s a big behind the scenes thing because we want people to see the artistry in terms of the model makers and the set designers, the stuff that we were so blown away by that we want people to be blown away by too.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, DVD Purists:
Matt Stone: We’re kind of purists. I think DVDs should just be the movie.

Trey Parker: Yeah, I do too. If they made an Outlaw Josey Whales with DVD extras, I would never want to see this because it could ruin the movie for me.

Matt Stone: We’re kind of weirdly purists in that way. Why would anybody watch any of that stuff? As long as the movie is there and it’s the way it should be, that’s the statement. That’s the piece of art. Everything else is just not my deal.

Trey Parker on Recovering from Team America: World Police:
“I think in the next month we’ll recover but we had to go right from the movie, directly from a 3 week post schedule which is unheard of, right into a season of South Park which is brutal. A lot of people think, ‘Well, you guys sit back and produce.’ No, we work our ass off on that show. And then we had a month and a half off for Christmas and all that, but everyone knows how hectic Christmas is and all of that. A little bit of down time and then right back into this last season of South Park."

Celebrities Like Team America World Police... Except For Sean Penn:
Trey Parker: I just recently got a letter from Stephen Sondheim saying it’s one of his favorite movies of all time. We just got a letter from Russell Crowe saying he loved it. Elton John.

Matt Stone: There’s plenty of people we actually respect their opinion like Stephen Sondheim or Penn Jillette who love it. Those people, we’re like, “Wow, you liked the movie? That’s cool that you liked it.” If other people don’t like it, it’s kind of who says the opinion too that matters.

Trey Parker on Oscar Snubs for Team America World Police: “I think we’re just not really welcome there anymore. I think it was before Team America. When we wore the dresses there, there were Academy members that were super not happy with that. So, we weren’t really expecting any kind of a nomination.”

Trey Parker on Adapting the Montage Song for Team America: “It was a song for South Park that we really loved. And we were following the Bruckheimer structure, where like that’s what happens in a Bruck’. Now you get to the third act montage.”

South Park and That's My Bush DVD Talk:
Defending Mini-Commentary on the South Park DVDs

Trey Parker: The whole thing about not doing full episodes on South Park was an honest thing of we were sitting there, we’d start the first one and we’d talk about it and do whatever. For about five minutes we’d be like, “Okay” and then we’d be like, “I don't know what else to say.”

Matt Stone: I don't think I could talk for however long this movie is. I don't think I have that much to say about this movie.

Don’t Expect a New South Park Movie DVD

Matt Stone: The thing about the South Park movie is there doesn’t exist any deleted scenes. There’s no other materials. Maybe a shot or two here and there, but they don’t exist anywhere. I think the whole deleted scene thing is weird because you delete scenes because they suck for the most part. The way we did that movie with computer animation, you just don’t have a lot of deleted scenes. Or we had some scenes in the South Park movie that it’s the same exact scene but with a different setting. In other words, what happened at the PTA meeting, originally the scene was outside. It’s the same scene, they’re just standing out on the street. So the only thing we could do for another DVD is a commentary.

Trey Parker: But we also hate that idea of, “Let’s put out this edition and try to make more money.”

Matt Stone: A special edition, the only thing special about it is a commentary?

Hopes for That’s My Bush: The Complete Series DVD

Trey Parker: I hope so. I think it should. I thought it was a good show. I think they’re working on it.
